Here is a very fast and totally incomplete lesson for you.
I know that many people think it is funky granola hippie unsubstantiated hoopla. And by the grace of my Aromatherapy training I understand the why! Here is a very fast and totally incomplete lesson for you.
All essential oils are made of of several chemical constituents (you can see them on a GC/MS report). These constituents have amazing therapeutic properties such as antibiotic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, carminative, analgesic, tonic, immunostimulant, airborne deodorizer and many more. Each oil profile is different though many share similar constituents and thus similar uses which is what makes them so versatile.
Lavender demystified - A quick chemistry lesson!
I am looking at a GC/MS report of a bottle of doTERRA Lavender. Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry is a test that can tell you everything that is in the oil, including pesicides etc. This report shows me 31% Linalyl Acetate and 34% Linalool. (That leaves 35% of other healing constiuents). What are Linalyl Acetate and Linalool?? Those are two of those chemical constituents I was telling you about.
Linalyl Acetate is an ester, thus it is gentle and loving. This chemical constituent (remember, this is science) is: an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, Antibacterial, Sedative, Antitumoral, Antiulcerogenic, and an Immunostimulant!
Linalool is Airborne antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti anxiety, antibacterial, anticonvulsant, antifungal, antioxidant, antispasmodic, antitumoral, antiviral, hypotensive, immunostimulant, sedative.
Can you see why Lavender is called the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils! It is so skin friendly, it can support stress and anxiety, it cools burns, it supports immunity, it gets rid of nasty bacteria and viruses and so much more!

At 66, I am still honoring my hippie roots, although I do occasionally shave my legs, I love Essential Oils! And not just Patchouli!
